The Secret to Easy Life

One night, I went to the hospital to take care of my sick elder sister. At nine o’clock, an over 70-year-old woman was taken to the emergency room for heart attack. Brought out of danger through a long treatment, she was transferred to the ward in which we were. After everything was well-arranged, she said to her husband weakly, “The paddy has been reaped … but not gathered. … Early tomorrow morning, you go home by bus … to gather it. … Leave me alone here.
Come back after collecting it.” Her husband said hastily, “No! I can’t do like that! I can’t leave you alone….” Having seen the scene, I couldn’t help but feel sympathy for her: You are in poor health, why can’t you still put aside the paddy? Is it more important than your life? Why do we mankind live so tired?

At that moment, I thought of the word of the Lord Jesus, “Therefore I say to you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they?” (Matthew 6:25-26). That’s right. What do we rush about throughout our life? One is about food, and the other is about clothes. The food is used to cram ourselves for survival, and the clothes is used to cover our shame and to cover ourselves against the cold. However, our worries are not merely from seeking eating well and clothing ourselves, but from our greedy desire within and yearning toward fame and wealth. In this world, whether the dignitaries or common people, they all have their own plans for life and all strive for all kinds of goals in life. Nevertheless, when lots of people toil away to the end of life, they will sorrowfully discover pursuing fame and gain all their life is like chasing the wind and clutching at shadows, that all they have done is empty, and that living in this way, they are not happy and don’t have true comfort and steadiness. At this time, I comprehended the true significance of life: The life is more than food, and the body is more than clothes. If I had a chance to restart my life, I would be sure to change the way of life. Yet, There is no ifs in our life. The passing time can’t come back.

The old woman’s short conversations with her husband don’t simply make me feel the attachment of a woman in old age to a field of mature paddy but see it is a mirror of our life. Although many of us know fame and gain are mere worldly possessions, yet no one can truly put down the hunger for them, so that we have no choice but to carry many heavy burdens to struggle so hard in the world.

God says, “Only when one accepts the Creator’s sovereignty, submits to His orchestrations and arrangements, and seeks true human life, will one gradually break free from all heartbreak and suffering, shake off all the emptiness of life.” The word of God tells us the secret to have a relaxed life: Only if we come in front of the Creator and obey His designs and arrangements for our fate can we gain the peace and ease in our spirits and live out a meaningful life. We’ll face countless crossroads and choices in our whole life. Whether we would like to continue to wear the shackles of fame and gain to spend the day in vain or to break away from these burdens to gain the true freedom, it depends on our own choice!
